    New room, new discussion.
Please keep talk restricted to AP related issues (CBD Special from August 2011).
Everything else goes into the regular Alien thread in the Library.

    Thanks Lars. :top:
Here is the new image as requested. It would be much appreciated if this image is kept within CBD and not shared wider. :thank:

As Jose mentioned, the base has a much more organic, wet look than the images seen previously. Possibly caused by the lighting before.
You can also see how the surface of the base has been scooped out where the feet will sit. The nameplate is a departure from the usual silver plaque, but to be honest I'm not sure how the silver would have held up with everything else going on.
    What do you guys think?

This is a very cool base and a unique opportunity to own something truly special. Congrats to all that will be receiving one. It might just be me but I get more of an Aliens vibe with this more so than the original Alien.

My dictionary only states "panoptic". Can someone explain what "panopticon" means? :baffled:
Is it related to the all-seeing eye of Sauron? :palantir: :D

As much as I try to wrap my head around another way they could have done it for the sake of continuity...I just can't come up with a better way to execute it.
It would have been cool to get a metal plate with the movie font like the Predator has, but given the new base design they really wanted to go all out. The place where the plate would have been has become one with the base making the whole thing integrated.
I sort of wish the Predator had a metal plaque with a red hue to it (or movie font sculpted on the base) to make the monster trio distinctive in their name presentation. The metal plaque on the T-800 works well enough since it's a machine.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that the word 'ALIEN' on the front of the base should be in a more contrasting color? I think black or a similar grayish-green color as on the base would make this display pop. Currently, I feel that the word blends in too much to the yellow and is not noticeable until you look at it up close.

It's not just you. Looking at it I sort of agree with that suggestion but I can also see what they were trying to do. A rust effect around the letters to make the font dramatically "appear".
It's one of those things that could go either way and it may look better in person.

    1. A room place such that all things are visible from a single point.
    2. A room for the exhibition of novelties.

Absolutely agree with you Joseph. My only thing is will it take away from the statue? I would have to see it in hand.

Tim and José, you both bring up good points. To judge only from this great new pic of the base, I would go with the more rust effect you mentioned to get that more "contrasty" feel that Tim mentioned, and appears to be missing from the pic.
Have to wait to see it in hand.

I do see the Alien font in the lettering used myself, but it's not quite as obvious as the black on silver from the regular base.
I agree with you Jose that the nameplate is heavily integrated with the base. I have the feeling that the direction taken with the plaques for subsequent releases might have been quite different had this base been released instead of Giger's choice, and broken the mould up to that point as it were.

I get a sense of this being the idea, like Jose said, the font is supposed to just "appear" as it does at the beginning of the film. How well that effect is achieved in person I guess we'll have to wait and see. Lighting will probably play a big role too I expect.

you have a point there Tim , I went back and just stared at the pic for a good while and although it will be better to see this in person we will get a better idea of how the name will look , I do agree with Steve , when I saw this for the first time My first thought was oh I see I get it the name seems to be appearing and I do see that , I wonder if it were black or more prominent color the rest of the color around it would just look wrong , and will take away from the name appearing effect, also it could be the pic that makes it disappear more due to the light flash?

I think it's great, love it!
The color, the low-key caption. I was very surprised to see this on an alternative base where the temptation could be to just slap on another metal plate and get it out the door.
Plus my gf approached me the other day and said "hey, what I wanted to ask you, from what movie is that T-Boo robot again?
She now likes to call him T-Bot, damn tease.
So the moral is you either know what it is or you just, ermm, don't, lol.

The more I think about it, the dark font on yellow background I associate with Batman.
The rust effect as the name font as it pushes and appears may be better in person.

Yeah, I think it's fair to say that the pictures so far probably haven't shown us everything the base has to offer in person. The brown colouration around the letters may well be much more obvious in person.
And I agree with Jose's Batman analogy. Matte black on yellow - too garish perhaps?
