They can't possibly be covering it completely with decals, right?
New low for collecting if they are Phil.
Damn,I like this predator statue very much...don't know what to do and I'm inbetween thoughts atm...on the other hand I'm looking at the decals ECC used for Puck's eyes and it it looks superb.I'm looking at the stripes on the Neytiri bust and it looks equally as good.In fact Atheris (Chris) couldn't tell if it was paint or decals in his youtube review, same with others that reviewed the bust,it was that well done.I'm looking at that awful painted P2 crown on the legendary scale bust and you'd almost have regrets they didn't use a decal for that.
So,my question = Are decals really a step back if used properly? What do you guys think?
Whatever looks best. That's how I feel about it. I think the price should reflect the decreased manpower it took to use decals due to less hand painting...but that's never the case.
I tend to agree with you alex on whatever looks best but I don't think there's less work involved necessarily with decals.
It's not like a big sticker you apply and be done with it.There's sealing involved and it must be quite the job (hassle) if you have all sorts of small decals to apply patiently & professionaly. I'm going to take a guess here... I suspect that some of the patterns such as the crown is very difficult to get mass painted correctly (see P2 lsb!) and if it means having a substitute to get a proper outcome then maybe it's not one of the worst of ideas to use decals sporadically.
Btw I never heard the outcry for using decals on the $2500 Rosenberg bust!?ECC decided the best way to replicate those 4 small screens were decals...so there you have it.Does anyone think less of this bust?Don't think so.
I'm expecting the P2 maquette will be painted for the most part and that some of those patterns will be decals.
I just can fathom it otherwise....
Phil I agree with your thinking - decals take some of the e guesswork out of China's hands and should result in an overall more consistent product.
Decals have been used on statues for a long time and this I guess is the next logical step. However my own feeling is that it cheapens the production. I mean the P1 maquette came out great and that was what eight years ago? What's changed that they can't continue to produce high quality hand painted products and have to instead rely on decals for the surface detail?
Steve,I honestly think those that painted the P1 maquettes don't work any longer at the Sideshow factories/or the factory that painted these is no longer under contract with SS ,lol.I wouldn't be surprised in the least if many of those good painters are now working in the Toynami factories and are actually the same people that worked on the cinemaquette predator.George must have snatched all the best painters in the business!
That said the Sideshow factory did an incredible job on the latest Conan PF (rage)! But of course there were no difficult patterns to paint here...nevertheless, the shadowing /nuances is one of the best I have seen on a human muscular body...
Steve,I've just found a post from Igo (SS representative & artist) which basically supports what I'v said in my previous post...
"I agree our QC needs improvement, internally we all agree and it's something we're trying to figure out, but there's a lot more going on in China than you guys know as well. Factories coming and going, prices, politics, etc."
"FACTORIES COMING AND GOING..."

It did my friend...I clearly remember how awe-strucked I was looking at the paintwork, and in particular the inside of the mouth & the eyes. This was a level of mass painting of such quality one would think it was painted by a pro.In the back of my mind I knew that this was very special.Too bad the pose was not on par and ultimately killed it for me.

It seems like one thing after another with this guy unfortunately.
The quote is that "most" of the body and head will be decals. Hopefully a mistake given it is a $1200 (1600+ for UK guys) 1/4 statue. Any confirmation would be appreciated please. "
SSAlex: "The crown tattoo will be decals and some of the body tattoo will be decals (i.e.: the black tattoos). I do not know the ratio of decal to hand paint that will exist for the body tattoo just that some of it will be hand painted and some will be decal. "

Thanks again. "
SSAlex: "Correct..the black spotting. The brown, yellow, beige, bronze, etc. paint schemes you see on the body, armor, weapons, face. etc are not decals. Those elements would be airbrushed/painted. "
Oh no sideshow hopefully a one off.
Should have used decals to hide the seam.
2 different hulk?
Even the skin texture is completely different
It's almost as if the body and head were painted in different factories, oh no wait...
My first look I thought it was photoshop lol.
Shame cause that's a cool looking statue.
